one boy at the cure sale

Curesale_one_boy_2

Since they didn't hold the Cure Sale this year, parts of the festivities still took place elsewhere in the desert, but there wasn't the huge gathering of all the different nomads in one spot. I hope things calm down enough that they hold the fete in 2008, usually it's in September.

Tomorrow will be the last day of your trip to the Cure Sale. Lots still to see here in Niamey, Peter just got back from Ouagadougou and took some of cool pictures on the road, so I'll be posting those in the next few days. Start saying good-bye to one of the oldest festivals in the world.

afternoon tea

Tea_man_2

I almost wimped out today and used a photo from my stash, but instead walked around the corner. These guys were steps from my house, making tea. To drink this tea takes some practice and an iron stomach. The couple times I've tried it, after I swallow, it wants to come right back up. It is syrup sweet and strong.

niger's literacy rate: 13%

Squatter_school_4

Not far from the French school (where the French Ambassador's daughter is in my daughter's fifth grade) take a turn and you will find yourself in the middle of a village. The property's owner is the country of Germany, they aren't using it, but it explains the name of the village: Casa Allemande. This little village school sits in the center of the Niger's capital city, Niamey.
